I'm in charge of the narrative that is my life. I don't have to be at the mercy of the story I tell myself, to myself.

The first course

Where the Gold Goes

A two-hour mini-course on listening to your kid until you actually understand them.

You know the conversation. You go in with your point all lined up, and about ninety seconds in your kid has their arms crossed and you're both defending positions neither of you really cares about anymore.

When a talk goes sideways, it's usually not because we said the wrong thing. It's because the other person felt attacked, so they dug in. So this course flips the usual approach: don't practice saying your piece. Practice listening until you understand how your kid sees it. You can't change a picture of the world you don't understand.

That's the kintsugi part. The crack in a conversation isn't the end of it. It's where the gold goes.

Three tools

Plus the basics: aim to understand, not to win. Be on the same side. Ask, don't tell: "How did you come to see it that way?" Say "I could be wrong," and mean it.

30 minutes, 4 times a week

Day 1Why talks go wrong, and the basics.
Day 2Mirroring and asking, in easy chats.
Day 3Add labeling. "Sounds like you're tired."
Day 4One full conversation. Listen until "that's right."

It's for you if you love your kid, you're tired of the same argument, and you're willing to try going first. It's probably not for you if you're looking for a script that makes your kid agree with you. I don't have one. Nobody does.
